The Addams Family Movie Is Fantastic!
“They’re creepy and they’re kooky, Mysterious and spooky, They’re all together ooky, The Addams Family. Their house is a museum Where people come to see ’em They really are a scream. The Addams Family.” Duh duh duh duh. Snap snap. ( (you HAVE to snap your fingers if you really want to show the love)
There is a new Addams Family movie to get excited about. I had the chance to see it in the theatre last night and I loved it.
Here’s the thing. There were a LOT of people in that theatre last night that had no idea who the Addams Family even were outside of this movie. Which made me feel super old. My daughters and their friend didn’t know the song or the snapping. All three of them under the age of 17 knew nothing of the TV Addams Family that some of us – cough – older generation grew up watching. Even if it was just re-runs.
My youngest looked at me in shock when I sang along with the theme song. And in surprise when I snapped my fingers. IN THE THEATRE . Hey, when that song plays you sing and you snap. It just happens.
It’s an animated movie, and we chose to see it in 3-D.
All the characters were there. Gomez and Morticia Addams. Lurch – who played a mean piano and cranked out some great songs throughout the movie. Their kids Wednesday and Pugsley, Uncle Fester and Grandmama. And don’t forget Thing and Gomez’s cousin Itt – who also made an appearance.
This family has been around for decades. They originally appeared as cartoons published in The New Yorker.
It was in the sixties, they came to TV, in a series starring John Astin and Carolyn Jones. That inspired a 1977 television film and cameos from the cast in other shows.
In the 1990s, Orion Pictures (which by then had inherited the rights to the series) developed a film version, The Addams Family (released on November 22, 1991).
This is a family that has a huge influence on us. According to The Telegraph, the Addamses “are one of the most iconic families in American history, up there with the Kennedys”
Time has compared “the relevance and the cultural reach” of the family with those of the Kennedys and the Roosevelts, “so much a part of the American landscape that it’s difficult to discuss the country’s history […] without mentioning them”.
TV Guide, listed the characters in the top ten of The 60 Greatest TV Families of All Time.
If you’re looking for a fun, family friendly movie, sure to give you a lot of laughs and a bit of nostalgia – I highly recommend going to see The Addams Family.
Two things up – I mean, thumbs.
