Bird Box Breaks Streaming Record
Bird Box viewed by over 45 Million Netflix Accounts
Last week, Sandra Bullock’s new movie was released. “Bird Box”, based on the novel written in 2014, sparked the attention of over 45 million Netflix accounts in its first week, which made it the best opening week ever for a Netflix film.
Although that is a record for the streaming service, there is debate about what this number actually means. Because the release of this film was so different from a traditional Hollywood production, there is no authoritative box office tracking firm, and “views” does not necessarily mean that the Netflix user watched the film in its entirety. While there is no official way of tracking views, a spokesperson for Netflix stated that the company only counts an account as having watched the movie “once a view surpasses 70 percent of the total running time (including credits),” and that “each ‘account’ may include multiple views and viewers but is only counted once.”
If this is true, then at least 45 million people watched the majority of the film in its first running week, making the total view count potentially higher than the number of accounts that have “viewed” Bird Box.
All I know is that my son has already watched it twice…
