The View From Here – Wellness Wednesday Check-in

Happy Wednesday friends!  I wanted to check-in and see how you are feeling?

We made it through the federal election.  My hope is that no matter who you voted for or who you supported – whether they won or not – that we can stay strong as a country.  That we are reminded of how great we are as a country and we keep the elbows up mentality and remind ourselves of what truly matters.

But I will admit, spending any amount of time online recently has been challenging.  Lots of opinions.  Lots of negativity.  And I find it’s been happening more and more, not just around politics.  Social media can be a very negative, even toxic, space.  Even Katy Perry spoke out recently on the negativity and hate she has received online, mostly after her trip to space.

I think it’s important to protect your energy and put up boundaries for yourself whenever necessary.  It can be a very positive place and it’s for sure a great way to stay connected to family and friends.  But it’s hard to limit time online and stop the scroll.

Yesterday I made a decision to remove myself from social media once again.  I haven’t deleted anything.  YET.  But I have limited myself.  I took apps from my phone and deactivated my accounts.

Do you still use social media?  What are your go-to apps that you use?  Has the online negativity swayed you?  Turned you away?  Do you take social media breaks? How often?

This isn’t the first time I’ve taken a break – but I realize that I’m on my phone way too much for my own liking.   To be fair, that’s how it’s designed.  To keep us coming back.  To keep us scrolling.

Taking a break is good for our mental health and highly encouraged.  Ed Sheeran did it a decade ago and he’s now just going back to those old images on an old iPhone.

Taking a break from social media can significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while also improving body image. Too much screen time can lead to eye strain, poor posture, and can disrupt your sleep.

Looking to take a break?

Delete apps from your devices to reduce temptation to check them.
Set Boundaries.  Find other things to do.  Limit use.  Turn off notifications.

When you do return to social media, try to use it more mindfully and intentionally.

I wanted to share a podcast I listened to this morning.
