Movies – Are You Following The #Barbenheimer Movement?

Barbenheimer.  A combination of movie titles.   Barbie.  Oppenheimer.  Two blockbuster movies hit theatres this weekend at the same time.  And from the same company.   In competition with themselves?

Barbie.  Many expect it to be a silly movie.

Oppenheimer – you’re dealing with the story of the man who created the atomic bomb during World War II.

Two extreme movies.  Or are they?

Either way – both broke box office records this past weekend.  Moviegoers went to the theatre in record numbers. Bringing in way more people and money than expected. Barbie claims the top spot with 155 million US in ticket sales from North American theatres, beating the Super Mario Bros Movie as the biggest opening of the year and breaking the first weekend record for a film directed by a woman.

“Oppenheimer” also went beyond expectations, taking in 80.5 million U.S. – one of the best-ever starts for an R-rated biographical drama.

It’s also the first time that one movie opened to more than US $100 million and another movie opened to more than US$80 million in the same weekend.
