New Music Monday – “Dean Lewis – How Do I Say Goodbye”

When I first heard this song I cried.   If you have ever had to say goodbye to someone you love – especially a parent – this song just might wreck you for a minute.

Dean Lewis wrote this song for his dad who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.  He was given a 25% chance of living beyond a year.  His dad is currently in remission which is incredible news, but the emotions that went into the songwriting here are big.  He writes of having to say goodbye to his dad and how will he be able to do that.

The video shares clips of him and his dad in childhood and more.

Watch the video, and listen for the song this afternoon at 3:45.  And I’m sorry in advance for making you cry.

Some things to know about Dean Lewis –

He’s from Sydney, Australia.

His career was inspired by the band Oasis after watching a live concert DVD of the band in 2005.

Before he started making and performing his own music, he actually worked as a sound engineer, and was the one setting up shows for other artists.

His first big hit “Be Alright” was not about one of his personal break up experiences but those collectively of close friends.  Dean says “The song is actually about hope and knowing that in the end things will work out by surrounding yourself with good people.”
