It was this day in 1995 in music history that Alanis Morissette released the infamous “Jagged Little Pill” her breakthrough album. Featuring the hits “You Oughta Know” “You Learn” “Ironic” and “Hand In My Pocket”. Jagged Little Pill is a critical and commercial success, selling over 33 million copies worldwide. It’s also the first #1 album for Maverick, a label founded by Madonna. The album earns five Grammy awards, including Album of the Year, making 22-year-old Alanis Morissette the youngest artist to win the honor.
1988 – Paula Abdul’s debut album, Forever Your Girl, is released. An accomplished cheerleader and choreographer, she proves successful as a singer as well, as the album produces four #1 hits: “Straight Up,” the title track, “Cold Hearted” and “Opposites Attract.”
2015- Rachel Platten is thrown into the spotlight when Taylor Swift brings her on stage to perform “Fight Song” during her concert in Philadelphia. Interesting story. Rachel was 34 when she released her first album in 2003 and was ready to call it quits when she wrote “Fight Song” as motivation to keep going after her dreams. She was still without a record deal in 2014. At the beginning of 2015, a radio station in Baltimore started playing the song and listeners loved it. Columbia Records gave her a deal and promoted the single. When Taylor introduced Rachel at that show in Philadelphia she said “In music, there’s such a thing as a breakout moment for a brand new artist, where they come out of nowhere and all of a sudden everybody is singing this song. The song I’m referencing is a song called ‘Fight Song.'” After THAT show, the song went to the top of the charts and became the surprise hit of the summer. Many used it for inspiration, including Hillary Clinton, who used it as the theme song for her presidential campaign.
