Turning Red
Have you seen it yet? This movie is getting a lot of attention right now and I need to see it. It’s about a 13 year old girl – Mei Lee. She’s struggling to find her way. She wants to be the good girl but has a rebellious side. Oh, and when she gets too excited? She turns into a big red panda. A metaphor for puberty and the big changes that go with it. Director Domee Shi says Turning Red is a love letter to Asian Canadian girls. It’s set in the early 2000’s in Toronto. You’ll see all the landmarks – The CN Tower, SkyDome, Chinatown and Kensington Market. Domee says the film is based on her upbringing in Toronto and her relationship with her overprotective mom.
The film feautres the voices of of Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Ava Morse, Hyein Park, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Orion Lee, Wai Ching Ho, Tristan Allerick Chen, and James Hong. AND – it’s set in Toronto and is the first Pixar film directed by a woman.
I’ve been following the reviews online and so many people say it’s one of the best movies they’ve seen. Very emotional. I’m excited to watch it. The movie is available for streaming NOW on Disney plus.
