THROWBACK THURSDAY – MADONNA/ LIKE A PRAYER
Oh Madonna. What did you do this time? That’s just me saying what so many others probably were saying at the time. Madonna was and still is known for doing and saying things that will get people talking.
Today in music we remember that day in 1989 when Madonna got people all riled up over a video.
Just one day after the song “Like A Prayer” made it’s debut in a 2-minute Pepsi commercial, the video hits MTV and people get UP-SET.
We learned early that Madonna likes to shock and nothing seems to be off limits. She pushed her limits here and ended up losing a major endorsement deal with Pepsi.
In this video Madonna is seen witnessing a crime, kissing a black man, and dancing in front of burning crosses. People weren’t having it and threatened to boycott Pepsi.
Pepsi caved and dropped any association with Madonna, but let her keep the $5 million dollars.
Madonna made out just fine. Anybody she offended didn’t seem to be fans of her to begin with. And MTV loved it because more and more people watched to see the video for themselves. Radio stations added the song to their playlists and the song ended up going to number one, becoming one of the biggest songs of 1989.
