Is It Cake?
I stumbled upon this new show on Netflix and I can’t stop watching. I am addicted to “Is It Cake?” Nine bakers competing against each other, three at a time, turning cake into what look like REAL ITEMS. Is it a purse or is it cake? Is it a burger or is it cake? I’m only a few episodes on, but so far, it’s been an amazing thing to watch.
Remember when this whole “is it real or is it cake” trend started taking off and blowing our minds, to think that people were talented enough to make cake look like pretty much ANYTHING? This takes it to a whole new level. The idea for this show started from the popular meme that started in July 2020 after a Tasty video of seemingly everyday objects went viral on Twitter.
I am absolutely amazed watching these pastry chefs start from scratch and build a cake into what looks like a real item – shoes, purses, hats, fast food – it’s been amazing. Not easy at all. They have eight hours and use every minute.
The goal of each episode is for the bakers to fool three rotating celebrity judges. Five REAL items. ONE is cake. They judges have 20 seconds to work together to figure out which is cake. If they correctly guess the baker’s cake from the group of items, that baker is eliminated from that round. If they DON’T guess the cake, the baker has a chance to win up to $10,000. If more than one cake per round is incorrectly guessed, the judges choose the winner based on how good the cake tastes, and how good it looks. The winning baker gets $5,000 and a chance to earn another $5,000 if they are able to identify which container full of money is actually cake.
No. Not meaningful in any way. No lessons learned. But fun to watch and try to figure it out.
Have you watched? What did you think?
