Celebrating America

Dear American neighbours, we are excited for you and share in your joy and celebration.

If anything, this pandemic has taught us to look for a reason to celebrate.  Not our election. Not our politicians.  Not our country.  And whether you like Joe Biden or supported Trump, yesterday was a day of celebration that we could all watch.

It was refreshing to hear words of encouragement and hope.  It was inspiring to see Kamala Harris sworn in as the first female, Black, and South Asian American vice president.  Showing girls and young women everywhere you can do anything.

I loved some of the performances from last nights special “Celebrating America”, but did anybody else think Tom Hanks talked like he just got back from the dentist?  Or it was too cold for him to speak?

Bon Jovi’s performance of “Here Comes The Sun” was a favourite, a song of hope and encouragement.  Better days coming.  But it was Katy Perry’s performance to close the show that brought tears to my eyes.  Perfect song. Perfect end to the day.  Perfect reminder for today and all that we are feeling and going through and feeling as a whole.

Especially now, politics aside, it’s easy to resonate with the lyrics.

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?
Do you ever feel, feel so paper thin
Like a house of cards, one blow from cavin’ in?
Do you ever feel already buried deep?
Six feet under screams, but no one seems to hear a thing
Do you know that there’s still a chance for you?
‘Cause there’s a spark in you
You just gotta ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July
‘Cause baby, you’re a firework
Come on, show ’em what you’re worth
Make ’em go, “Oh, oh, oh”
As you shoot across the sky
Baby, you’re a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make ’em go, “Oh, oh, oh”
You’re gonna leave ’em all in awe, awe, awe
You don’t have to feel like a waste of space
You’re original, cannot be replaced
If you only knew what the future holds
After a hurricane comes a rainbow
I think it was the feel good song that the whole world needed in some way.  To be told as dark as it is, as much as you feel like you are lost in the wind, buried deep, there’s still a chance to shine.  After a hurricane comes a rainbow.  I think we are so ready for that rainbow.
