Montreal-based BioAmber has officially arrived in Sarnia-Lambton.  A welcoming ceremony was held this morning at Sarnia’s Lanxess site, the future home of BioAmber’s 80 million dollar bio-succinic acid plant.  BioAmber’s 17 thousand metric tonne facility will be the first of its kind in North America.  It’ll make produce succinic acid from glucose which will then be used to make things like auto parts and cosmetics.  President and CEO Jean-Francois Huc says Sarnia is a perfect spot to build a plant.

Sarnia-Lambton MP Pat Davidson is excited about BioAmber’s arrival.

BioAmber is working closely with Mitsui, a Japanese company that will assist them in shipping product abroad.  A groundbreaking is scheduled for this summer, it’s hoped the facility will be up and running by November 2013.

A date has been set for the Grievance Settlement Board to hear the appeal of 4 Sarnia Jail Guards who were fired March 15th.  OPSEU Local 128 President David Esser says the case will be heard June 28th.

The union contends staff is being terminated in order to speed up the jail’s closure, scheduled for 2014 when a new superjail opens in Windsor.  Esser says a fifth workers has been fired and they are trying to have his case heard as well on the 28th.  The province refuses to comment on the case, only saying it involves use-of-force.

Survival training is underway for city firefighters this week.  Sarnia Fire Public Education Officer Tom Marshall says three provincial instructors have been brought in the put the firefighters through numerous scenarios.  For instance, Marshall says they’re being taught what to do it they become entangled.

Marshall says the training also teaches what to do if a firefighter is trapped, lost or disoriented.  The training is being done Bert Logan Firehall at Wellington and Finch.
