Youth In Crisis Escalating

Following yet another teen suicide, there are hard statistics showing the number of youth in crisis is escalating locally.  Director of St. Clair Child and Youth Services Executive Director Rick Shields says their Crisis Follow-Up Program has seen a doubling in referrals, from 40 in 2009 to 79 in 2011

Shields says the escalating calls for help combined with lack of provincial funding means other less critical cases are forced to wait even longer for counselling.

A rally is planned for next week to push for more mental health and crisis care funding for youth.  A Facebook group “Call to Action for Sarnia’s Youth” organized the event following several teen suicides in the area.  Organizer and St.Clair Catholic District School Board Trustee Michelle White Parks spoke with Sue Storr on the “Talk Show” this morning.  She says all levels of government need to step up.

Rally participants are encouraged to wear yellow and picket outside the offices of MP Pat Davidson, MPP  Bob Bailey, Sarnia City Hall and Bluewater Health from 3 to 6pm Friday May 18th.

Emergency response equipment and information is on display at Clearwater Arena for the 7th annual Emergency Preparedness Day today.  Preferred Towing has brought back for a second year, what could be described as a “shock” display for students.  Owner Gary Vandenheuvel says they’re demonstrating how they would use equipment to lift a tanker off of a car trapped below.
