This Story Is Worth Sharing
You are going to love this story. It doesn’t matter what you think of Taylor Swift. What she did for Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show last night is nothing short of awesome. I warn you, it’s hard to read this without tearing up.
Jimmy Fallon returned to The Tonight Show last night. After losing his mother just over a week ago. (He cancelled all his shows last week). It was an emotional night as Jimmy paid an emotional tribute to his mother Gloria, sharing a story of how when they were little (he and his sister) “my mom would walk us to the store, and we would hold hands. And she would squeeze my hand three times and say “I love you”. Last week I was in the hospital and I grabbed her hand and squeezed “I love you” and I just knew we were in trouble.”
Here’s the thing. Taylor Swift wasn’t intended to be on the show. She wasn’t a scheduled guest. Mike DiCenzo, writer and producer for the show shared the details on Twitter explaining how everyone on the show loved Jimmy’s mother. He shared just how special she was. They loved her. She loved them. It was the first show back and it was a really tough day for the whole staff. So through a series of Tweets, he shared the story of how Taylor hadn’t been scheduled to perform, but they wanted to do something special for the first show back, and when they asked her she said didn’t hesitate.
She sang “New Year’s Day.” No one had heard the song before. In the song, there is the lyric “Squeeze my hand 3 times in the back of the taxi.” Jimmy Fallon had never told that story about his mother before, and nobody had heard “New Year’s Day” – so when Taylor sang that specific lyric, everyone started to cry.
Mike says “We all lost it. It was a beautiful coincidence in a beautiful performance. “Hold on to your memories, they will hold on to you,”
And as soon as Taylor finished her performance, she walked over to Jimmy and gave him a huge hug. Mike says was “100% real emotion”.
“Whatever you think of Taylor, she did something beautiful for Jimmy and our show today,” DiCenzo tweeted. “And we’re forever grateful.”
